Can my braces be removed for a special event?
When you get braces, you are committing to a long-term treatment plan. So what happens if you have a big event or function that falls right in the middle of your treatment? Can your orthodontist take your braces off temporarily?
While we are sympathetic to patients who are hoping to have their braces off for an important day, it is crucial for the success of the treatment that we refrain from doing so.
Why shouldn't braces be removed temporarily?
Orthodontic treatment using braces involves putting small amounts of pressure on each of your teeth using metal wires and brackets. This pressure will slowly move your teeth into their prescribed positions.
If we remove your braces early, even for a short amount of time, your teeth may shift into a different position, creating new dental issues. Your braces are also not reusable, so even if we took them off, we would need to place an entirely new set on your teeth.
This would result in a costly experience and the potential for new orthodontic issues, requiring you to begin treatment all over again.
How to Survive Special Occasions with Braces
Since taking your braces off for a special occasion isn't as simple as it sounds, how can you help make the day a success? Here are some tips for enjoying a nice event when wearing braces:
- Try to stay positive.
- Bring a hygiene kit, including a little toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.
- Remember to watch what you eat and drink.
- Practice smiling for photos ahead of time.
- Coordinate the colour of your outfit with your braces.
- Be prepared with pain medication and orthodontic wax.
What are some other orthodontic options?
If possible, we can begin treatment with enough time before your special event. If this is not possible, then you may want to consider other types of orthodontic devices, like Invisalign clear aligners.
Invisalign uses clear plastic trays that are not only discreet, allowing for natural-looking photos, but also removable, allowing you to eat all of your favourite foods during the occasion.
Speak with your orthodontist about your upcoming event and what options may be best suited to your needs.
